1. Have a relationship with God
Never remove the God-factor from your marriage plan because He is not just the author of marriage, He is also the sole owner of your life. So, if you haven’t given your life to Him, get into a relationship with Him today because you need His guidance, protection and provision in life generally and in your marital journey. Therefore, get intimate with Him, and obey His commands (John 14:15).
2. Cultivate the habit of knowing and doing God’s will:
When knowing and doing God’s will become a natural part of your life, you won’t have to struggle to know His leading when it comes to marriage. Learn to hear God on seemingly little matters and involve Him in everything that you do. He is always ready to guide you (Isaiah 30:21).
3. Evaluate your reasons for wanting to get married:
Aim at fulfilling the divine purposes of partnership, procreation, purity, protection, provision, power, and pleasure in your marriage. It’s unfortunate that instead of focusing on these purposes, some people get married for wrong reasons like pity, pressure from family and the society, money, good looks, mere sexual attraction and the likes. Don’t set a faulty foundation by getting married for the wrong reasons.
4. Identify your purpose in life:
You are not on earth by accident; God has a purpose for your life. Discovering and functioning within your life’s purpose before getting married puts you on a focused path and brings fulfillment in life. It’s been noted that where there’s no purpose, many women get lost in the maze of wifehood and motherhood. Don’t fall into such category!
5. Get some form of education/training:
Get a degree, learn a vocation, and generally develop yourself in basic life/survival skills, financial management, communication, entrepreneurship/investments and the likes. You will be better prepared to make a meaningful contribution to the success of your marriage.
6. Guard your heart:
Firmly guard your heart against lust worldliness, idols, and desperation. Set your affection on Christ instead of being desperate and making marriage your ultimate goal in life. The best way to protect your heart is to fortify it with the Word of God. “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 11 9:11).
7. Hone your housekeeping skills:
Ensure you get better at a good number of housekeeping skills such as cooking, planning monthly or weekly meals for the family, laundry, vacuuming and cleaning the rugs and carpet and ironing clothes.
8. Take good care of your health:
One popular advert says, “the best gift you can give to your family and the world is a healthy you.” So, take good care of yourself now so you don’t plague your spouse-to-be with the chore of caring for a sick spouse.
In summary, you need God’s help and adequate personal preparation to succeed in marriage. Seek God’s face and prepare adequately. Don’t rush into it. Be patient and let God guide you. He makes all things beautiful in His time (Ecclesiastes 3:11).
