Different people have diverse ideas of who an ideal groom is. To some, he is defined by his position, wealth, level of exposure, and his physical appearance; to others, by his tribe, qualifications, and career. In this article, however, we will be looking at the portrait of an ideal husband from God’s perspective.
Just as there is a biblical picture of an ideal wife, so is there of an ideal husband. God’s idea of an ideal husband is totally different from that of the world. According to the Scriptures:
He is godly (Romans 8:9). A godly man is more than a male Christian or a churchgoer who pays tithe, gives alms and does other good works both in church and outside it. He is not a mere moralist. He is a man who has genuinely repented of all sins and is living a new life in Christ. He is a man of integrity and honour, living fully by the Word of God and the Spirit of God. His first priority in life is God, followed by his family, his work and other interests. His desire is to see his family serving God and achieving all that God has for them. He loves his wife and children more than anything else. He protects them physically, emotionally, spiritually, and financially. A godly man is the head of his house and he loves and cherishes his family just as Christ loved the church and gave His life for her (Ephesians 5:25).
He protects He is faithful (1 Corinthians 4:2). An ideal groom is faithful in all things. He doesn’t live a life shrouded in secrecy; he lives a transparent life. He is faithful to God in service, giving, ministry, and other spiritual assignments. He is faithful to his wife and children. He neither flirts around with other women nor prioritizes less important things above the care for his children and the overall welfare of his family.
He is a provider (1Timothy 5:8). One of the major duties of a husband is to provide for the needs of his immediate family Irrespective of how rich a woman may be, she will always look up to her husband for the needs of the home. Hence, an ideal husband takes it as a priority to provide security and basic needs like shelter, clothing, food and good leadership for his family, sometimes at his own expense.
He is a protector (Genesis 19:1). No family is immune to challenges. Every home has a fair share of life’s problems because they’re a part of our experiences on earth as humans. Nevertheless, an ideal husband ensures that his family is secured as much as he can. He is the chief security officer of his family, who protects his wife and children from all forms of internal and external aggression.
He is loving and caring (Ephesians 5:25). In courtship, a man may just talk about love but in marriage, a see the demonstration of love. The ideal husband is not short of this. He is not lust a husband by title, he is loving and caring. He practically demonstrates this to his wife and children. Whether it’s a normal day or a special day, he gives his wife a helping hand in doing house chores and taking care of the children and He’s not too refined to help his wife in the kitchen. To him, a woman must not be overburdened with responsibilities without quality support from the husband. He goes all out to make his wife happy and comfortable. This, in turn, makes his wife look younger and more beautiful.
The reality is that every man wants to marry the ideal bride; fair enough, but the question is, are you the ideal groom for that bride? Remember, it takes two to tango; be what you desire.
